Luke Martins is an artist and creative producer from Sydney, Australia. Currently based in Tokyo, his practice spans fine art, art direction, exhibition curation, editorial publishing, design, moving image, installation, and fashion. Each stream converges through a collaborative, conceptually driven, medium-free approach in which ideas, rather than disciplines, determine form. In 2023 he founded and directed Rofe Street Gallery, where he produced exhibitions and interdisciplinary projects across fine art, fashion, and music.

An MFA graduate of the National Art School in 2025, his practice often leans toward site-specific installation and explores the methods through which we collaborate and fraternise with institutions to commodify cultural, spiritual, and artistic identities. His MFA research investigated how artists transform the materials of inspiration to develop a unique visual language, while exploring ideas of global citizenship, the new age self-help industrial complex, and the ways we share knowledge, experiences, and inspiration with one another.

Outside the contemporary gallery space, he regularly works across creative production and art direction, bringing together artists, designers, musicians, and brands through a variety of collaborative projects. These include exhibitions in unconventional spaces such as a bank vault and supermarket car park; styling, creative direction, and modelling for editorial and commercial shoots with international brands across Sydney, Tokyo, and London; and publication and design projects developed in collaboration with a New York fashion archive and musicians across Australia and the United States.

His practice extends beyond making artwork. He establishes platforms and initiates collaborative projects that create space for artists to expand their practice. Whether it’s through exhibitions, publications, moving image, or commercial collaborations, he is driven by a commitment to producing meaningful work with his contemporaries.

Colour Theory
2025

Balloons on/off realtree mat

A part of my MFA2 midyear review.

With this work I wanted to reduce category into simply colour. All the ways we categorise ourselves in order to identify ourselves, and inadvertently disguise ourselves from our true nature.

This work also pokes fun at painting, overconceptualised yet forsaken to decoration.

Family Command Centre
2025
World map corkboard, family command centre, solar panel

Just Cause
2025
Helmet cover, motorcycle helmet, globe soccer ball, wire, fence

Playing God
2025

Part of my MFA2 midyear review

Beach Studio
2025

studio contents in greenhouse, pasteup poster

Part of my MFA final Postgrad Show install located in the Rayner Hoff Space at the National Art School

“This work materialises Martins's experience of his studio-based Master of Fine Arts degree over the past two years. A greenhouse—an incubator for growth and productionholds the remnants of discarded artworks and ideas. A stock-image sun provides a synthetic optimism for inspiration to germinate.” - Lucy Latella (curator)

May the Circle Be Unbroken
2025

oil on twig, poster in frame

Part of my MFA final Postgrad Show studio install located in level 2 building 11 at the National Art School
This work shows what inspired me literally. The inspiration of the work created itself.

My work this year was about being inspired and as artists what we do with materials of inspiration do develop our unique “style”. Particularly this work using imagery from Raf Simons ss04 collection, as my vehicle of inspiration.

Snowy Mountain

Untitled (playlist)
2025

found media video work
1hour 3mins 37secs
Shown in my final MFA studio installation at the National Art School.

This work is a compilation and at times mashup of videos I had been collecting in a youtube playlist over the final year of my degree.

I chose to have music playing over the whole video because thats what I do usually no matter what I’m doing I’m either listening to music or reminded of music in the process.
